Abortion

January 13, 2010

Since birth defects and abortion are two categories that sometimes meet, I thought that I would insert a Biblical case against abortion. I checked with the blog master.

Now this is the way ethics should be pursued – at least a bunch of dead theologians thought so. Check out the Westminster Confession Larger Catechism’s introduction to the Law. First, what does the Bible say on the subject? Second, and more specifically, how does the Law of God address the subject? That is the essence of the WCF, LC. And third, does the Law of God handle the subject more to the point in the case laws?

If you consider what God’s Law says, you will  remember the Ten Commandments. And the sixth commandment should pop up immediately, “You shall not murder” in Exodus 20:13.

So it is an easy answer. Until someone asks, ‘How do we know that an unborn baby is a life? Do we respond that it is obvious that the baby is a life, or do we use the case law to establish it? In fact, do we use the case law at all? The Apostle Paul did. Maybe we should follow his example.

In Exodus 21:22-25 an unborn baby is regarded as a life. Read, “If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”  You can easily see that the unborn (maybe pre-born is better) life is to be regarded as life.

God gave the case law to help Israel apply his law to a specific situation by way of example and with the use of wisdom. Of course, there are supporting verses against abortion and many things could be written about abortion to show it is murder. But this is the way to start, unfortunately most people don’t.
