Dentist Visit

January 11, 2010

Today we took Theo to the Dental school in Chapel Hill – kind of an emergency thing. But first, the insurance I had when Theo was born excluded members who were born with congenital birth defects, if I was eligible for public insurance (Medicaid). Of course, being the kind of guy I am, I won’t name them (Christian Care Medi-share). And, of course, we cannot get him on insurance now – so to the Dental school.

The reason is he lost a tooth recently, which we could not find and his mouth started hurting him. Now the only way we know this, is the fact that he holds his mouth and cries. So, with much trepidation, we took him.

Come to find out, Monday is special needs day and let me tell you it was a special needs haven. One guy about thirty-five in a wheel chair with an assistant. He was pointing to words, I guess, on a large board to communicate with her. And another woman in a wheel chair that didn’t seem to be able to speak except through growling at her assistant. Yet another young man that darted from place to place with his father trying to corral him. Let me tell you, these Dentists-to-be are doing some kind of work.

So as soon as we entered our room – Theo knew. I had to pick him up to place him in the chair, but he actually performed well, as all of us looked inside his mouth. A place we have hardly seen. After a moderate wrestling match and a botched X-ray we all decided to give it some time. Hopefully we won’t have to remove the tooth. That would involve anesthesia, which would involve a lot.
